by Guy 'Guido' Allen, Jan 1, 2021

Ducati 996 SPS

Iconic Bike Auctions in the USA recently had this 2000 Ducati 996 SPS on offer. Bidding hit Au$24,000 (US$18,500, GB£13,500) but it failed to reach reserve.

Unquestionably collectible, this was effectively the second of three generations for the iconic shape that started with the 916. It was penned by Massimo Tamburini, whose next major styling work was the MV Agusta F4 750.

The SPS was initially priced at a heady $39,000 in Australia, some $10k more than a 996 Sports and over $20k more than the Honda Fireblade of that year.

On board you were treated to Ohlins suspension at both ends, premium Brembo brakes and special lightweight five-spoke wheels. It was 8kg lighter than the stocker at a claimed 190.

Meanwhile the powerplant claimed bigger valves and different timing to a Sport, along with a peak power of 123hp (92kW) compared to 112 (83kW).

This example claimed up-to-date servicing and just 1307 miles (2100km) on the odo. It was production number 1619.
