Z1-R outperforms CB750 at auction (September 8, 2021, by Guy 'Guido' Allen) A 1979 Kawasaki Z1-R II easily broke the top estimate at this week's Shannons auction, while a 1969 Honda CB750-Four K0 struggled. All 22 motorcycles offered were sold. The Kawasaki (lot 81– at top) sold for Au$32,000 (US$23,600, GB£17,100), an exceptional price for the model and a little over the top estimate of Au$30,000. By way of contrast, the Honda (lot 83 – above), which was listed as a rare sandcast version, went for a relatively modest Au$37,750 (US$27,800, GB£20,200) – well below the reasonable Au$50-60k estimate. It was nevertheless a well-presented machine – see the gallery below. A solid buy was the 1937 AJS 37/2 V-twin (lot 94), which went for Au$30,500 (US$22,500, GB£16,300). That was close to the upper pre-auction estimate, but below what the same bike would typically fetch in Europe. The seller of a 1953 BMW R68 (lot 89) should have been pretty happy with the Au$45,000 (US$33,200, GB£24,100) bid on that machine. That was in line with international prices and arguably towards the top end, given its condition. For our money, the 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo (lot 77) was good value at Au$12,000 (US$8900, GB£6400).
