Mixed results for classics auction by Guy ‘Guido’ Allen, Feb 26, 2021
Market may not be as bullish as late last year The results for the most recent Shannons classics auction, which concluded last Tuesday night, suggest the market may not be as bullish as it was a few months ago. Last November's event (see the link below) drew some exceptional numbers, while this time around the results were more mixed. Among the strong results was the tribute Harris Suzuki XR69 1000 racer (lot 89 – top pic), which rolled around five per cent past the top estimate to sell for Au$42,500 (US$33,200, GB£23,800). It required some (unspecified) work to get running. The top result of Au$64,000 (US$50,100, GB£35,900) went to a 1929 J-model Harley-Davidson (lot 100). That was around six per cent above top estimate. Landing neatly in its conservative estimated range was a 1928 BMW R62 750 (lot 98), fetching Au$40,000 (US$31,300, GB£22,400). Among the strong results was a 1976 Honda Gold Wing (lot 83) that fetched Au$15,250 (US$11,900, GB£8600). Not an earth-shattering amount of money, perhaps, but a decent bid for a model that has long struggled to get the market recognition it deserves. See our model backgrounder. Another solid result was for the 1976 Suzuki GT750A (lot 81) at Au$17,000 (US$13,300, GB£9500). That's up there for a later model 'waterbottle', but this was an exceptional survivor that, a few months ago, might have been expected to break the Au$20k mark. See our model backgrounder. The very complete 1983 Yamaha RZ350 (lot 86) wandered just a little past its top estimate and went for Au$9500 (US$7400, GB£5300). We half-expected it to climb another 20-30 per cent. See our model backgrounder. Another result to fall into the 'good but not earth-shattering' category was for the well-presented 1970 Norton Commando Fastback (lot 95), which went for Au$16,000 (US$12,500, GB£9000). Previously we've seen them add a solid 20 per cent to that figure. It was in good company with a 1965 Triumph Bonneville 650 (lot 91) fetching Au$15,500 (US$12,100, GB£8700). If bang for your classic buck was your mission, the buy of the week award went to a 1976 Kawasaki KZ750 twin (lot 85), which fetched Au$6600 (US$5200, GB£3700). It may not be the most desirable model on the planet, but it's hard to argue with getting a good-sized seventies Kawasaki in what seemed great shape for that sort of money. Plus, it's rare enough to be a guaranteed discussion-starter. See the full results at Shannons November 2020 Shannons results
